Can You Reduce Food Waste With Indoor Hydroponics? Ikea Thinks So

Gardening is a great way to make sure you always have fresh produce, and it can save you a little money in the long-term. However, gardens have seasons, and you can only grow a garden when the weather permits. So they are, at best, a partial solution to the problem of how you can get clean, fresh food right at your backdoor.

Well, Ikea examined this issue, and it has an at-home hydroponic system people can use to grow their own food year-round.

The Future Finds Its Way Into Your Kitchen

Hydroponics have been in use for some time, and they’re growing more popular by the day when it comes to growing our food. They can be set up anywhere, they use fewer resources than traditional farming (including a total lack of soil), and what’s best is that they function year-round. So even if it’s the dead of winter, you can still have fresh tomatoes, carrots, or whatever else your system is set up to grow.

This system has a lot of advantages, but one of them might be a reduction in food waste. Because if you make a concerted effort to grow produce yourself, rather than leaving it forgotten in a crisper drawer, then it’s more likely to get eaten. If more food gets eaten, and that food is produced with fewer resources, then that’s a net gain overall. If enough people send the message that this is a product they want, that is a lot less waste, and a lot fewer resources used to produce one of our necessary staples.

It’s even possible we might eat a little healthier, too.
